Don’t Do It!

“Hey, what do you bet I can hit you on the first throw?” Nicholas asked his classmate Simon during the first break, giggling.

“But take a few steps back!” Simon shouted.

Nicholas shook his head: “No, then you have an advantage!”

“I can’t get out of the way that quickly in my wheelchair,” protested Simon.

Nicholas took a step back and began to form a snowball. The teacher, Mrs. Schmidt, approached the two of them. “What are you doing?” she asked.

Nicholas quickly hid the snowball behind his back.

Mrs. Schmidt raised an eyebrow: “You know you’re not allowed to throw snowballs on the school playground, right?”

Disappointed, Nicholas dropped the snow, and the teacher moved along.

“She’s gone,” Simon grinned after a few seconds.

“No, let’s not do it,” said Nicholas. “She clearly said it’s forbidden.”

At lunch, Nicholas told his mother and little sister Laura about the incident.

“Did you throw snowballs afterward?” Laura wanted to know.

Nicholas shook his head.

“Why not?” Laura continued to ask.

“Because Jesus wants us to listen to the grown-ups. And Mrs. Schmidt is older than us,” Nicholas explained.

His mother nodded: “That was the right thing to do. Even if it’s not always fun, we should obey God’s will. Doesn’t Simon have an illness?”

Nicholas nodded: “Yes, his bones break very easily. That’s why he’s in a wheelchair.”

“Think about it, you could have seriously injured him unintentionally. It’s a good thing Mrs. Schmidt came in time.”

Nicholas thought about it and nodded. His mother was right. God had made sure that the teacher was there at the right moment.
