"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff comfort me!" (Psalm 23:4)

David was well familiar with these dark, narrow, valley paths. He knew what it was to despair in overwhelming circumstances, to fear what the future might hold, to worry about friends and loved ones, to suffer physical illness, and to be in deep anguish of soul. The Bible tells of people throughout human history who had to endure deep valleys. However, the child of God knows that the Good Shepherd is never closer at hand than in a crisis situation. Under the protection of His wings, he feels safe and secure (Psalm 46:5, 7; 91:4). Awareness of God’s presence brings him comfort and courage.

On that fateful Friday, the sun withdrew itself for a few hours - but the hearts of the disciples remained dark long after the sun returned. Their beloved Master was dead and buried. But then came Easter morning!

Out of a dark night dawns Easter morning. Dejected and sad, the women come to the Lord’s tomb. They are searching for the One who lived but was killed, the One whom their hearts loved above all else and who was torn from them by the most horrific death. Now they are looking for Him in the tomb! Jesus, who returned the young man of Nain to his mother, the one who called a decaying Lazarus from the tomb and presented him to his grieving sisters; this Jesus is the one whose body they are now looking for in the tomb. If Jesus remains in the tomb, is not the entire world nothing more than a vast graveyard, bereft of any light or hope?
